CONNECTION

CURRICULUM

Our history and stories often shape who we are and who we are becoming. This month, we are hearing from Vik who bravely shares his history with us, sharing the loneliness and darkest point of his life and how he rebuilt the friendships and connections he had lost. As we focus on the relationships that have shaped you this month, our challenge to you is to think about your story and your history. Who are the people who have influenced your life? What connections have shaped you? Are there any connections you would like to rebuild?

04.

My name is Vik! I am a gay and formerly incarcerated film-maker. I believe that connection is essential for grounding into our true, authentic selves. There was a time in the not so distant past that I almost lost my life to addiction. But today, my life is a blessing, as I am deeply connected with some of the most amazing people who inspire me and make me...me!

VIK CHOPRA

Vik shares the trajectory of his life and how he lost everything and how he has rebuilt. He describes how in his isolation he did horrible things and in his redemption he was able to connect back to all the people in his life that have value. I noticed that he didn’t talk about getting the things back that he lost. In what ways do we currently show the people in our lives that they mean more than the things?

As you think back over your life, are there people that have stood out? Why or why not?

What if Vik was in your life and stole from you–would you be willing to accept his apology and build back a relationship? Have you had to do that with someone?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Hand out shoe templates and share teacher example.
2. Each student should fill out the different parts of the shoe with a different life experience that has shaped who they are. Students then should color, outline, or shade in the shoe and then cut it out. Names can be included or kept anonymous. Teacher/School decides how to display these shoes around the school for students to connect with each other's history.
